Librarian’s role in helping the greater community find common ground in shared facts

The roles of the librarian depend a great deal on their specific position. For example, a high school library media specialist may be in a good position to collaborate with classroom teachers and create digital citizenship and digital literacy curriculum and lessons for students who are a captive audience, while most public librarians should consider their points of contact with vulnerable patrons and maximize the educational opportunities therein. An even more direct method for visual outreach than providing media bias charts is to make factual statements about the documented bias of sources that have been shown to have fictitious or misleading information. Call them out directly. Although it is important that librarians not allow their own biases to lead their actions, it is strictly factual to call out unreliable sources on both ends of the spectrum of socio-political ideology.

Hi Dhaivyd:

What have you found to be the most effective approaches in teaching HS students?

"collaborate with classroom teachers and create digital citizenship and digital literacy curriculum and lessons for students who are a captive audience" Also iteration. I always call it out when ideas/sources are not documented. Modeling unbiased presentations also helps, though I have no supporting data.
